“Do not waste time bothering whether you “love” your neighbor; act as if you did. As soon as we do this we find one of the great secrets. When you are behaving as if you loved someone you will presently come to love him.”- C. S. Lewis
“To love at all is to be vulnerable” - C. S . Lewis
This morning when I woke up at 3:30 am the term unconditional love kept popping into my head. I began to think about the word love, and asking myself what is love, what does it look like, what is unconditional love, how can I give unconditional love? I asked myself all of these questions and continued to think about them as I got ready for my day. Unconditional love has no limits or conditions; it is completely loving someone and trusting another person with your life. It is also wanting the utmost good for another person and assisting them in achieving their purpose in life. When you love unconditionally, you hide nothing of yourself, you allow yourself to be vulnerable and open.
Years ago when I was on a retreat team I used to perform a mime. Picture the red stage lights dimly hitting center stage. A girl walks out carrying her heart in her hands, her hands moving at the rate of a heart beat. She looks around and sees a group of people. A guy motions to her to come over and give him her heart. She looks at him then looks around and shakes her head “no” and walks away. She encounters another guy who motions to her and asks her what she has in her hands. She shows him her heart as it beats in her hands. He asks to hold it and she looks around then looks back and places her hands in his and lets him feel her heart beat in his hands. He moves his hands and asks to have her heart… she reluctantly releases her heart into his hands. She turns her head and the guy juggles her heart, plays hacky-sack with her heart. He throws her heart up in the air and catches it, he throws it up again and catches it, he throws it up another time and SPLAT… he drops it. He runs off and she turns around and sees her heart all over the floor. She begins to scoop her heart back into her hands… faintly it begins to beat again. As she is kneeling down picking up her heart, the one who loved first, Christ, comes and places His hands around her heart, and it beings to beat strongly again. This time as she passes people through her life, she shares the love in her heart with everyone she meets.
I share that drama because many of us have encountered people who said they would hold our heart but they ended up dropping it. I know a few people in my life have dropped my heart, and I in turn picked it up, however, I did not immediately share my love again. I held my heart close and refused to share it with those around me. It was not until I experienced the unconditional love of Christ and the unconditional love of key people in my life, that I was able to open up my hands again and to share love with others. The amazing thing is that when we give and share love, we get it back tenfold. Love that is not expressed is worthless. Even when people do not accept our love, think of it as planting a seed, eventually a flower will grow.
In those times when we may ask ourselves, “who will love me for me?” know that the one who created you will always love you and care for you, you are a child of the King.” YOU ARE LOVED!
Have a SUPERIFIC day!!!
