“The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” – Mohandas Gandhi
“The word compassionate samurai means to “serve”. A compassionate samurai is someone with strong values who can absolutely make anything happen and whose whole life is about service. “How-to’s” lead to incremental increases – small, progressive steps toward change. Much greater, lasting shifts – exponential alterations – occur when you actually change your character. The Compassionate Samurai possesses lasting character and he lives by ten codes: commitment, personal responsibility, contribution, focus, honesty, honor, trust, abundance, boldness and knowledge.” – Brian Klemmer
In reflecting on the nugget above, I developed the following works to assist you. Everything you do is an equation: Commitment + Personal Responsibility + Contribution + Focus + Honesty + Honor + Trust + Abundance + Boldness + Knowledge + Service = Compassionate Samurai. When I look at all of these characteristics I notice there are some that I display more than others while some need more development and formation. What I find interesting in the quote above is that it states “How to’s” lead to incremental increases (small change)…. changing your character will cause exponential alteration (much greater lasting change). When I read that I think to myself, I do not want small incremental increases… I want EXPONENTIAL ALTERATIONS. So how do I work towards exponential alterations? It states above, when you “change your character.” When you change your character to improve the lives of others your own life will be elevated to a new vantage point. When you are in a place of genuine service, your ego is removed and then everything you create, do with the purpose of selfless service. We have all been granted a unique set of gifts and talents that will be meaningful and prove to be of immense value to humanity. We are all connected and what we do affects all of those we meet and interact with, whether we know them or not.
Two things to reflect on for the day: How can I have a purpose of selfless service today? What characteristic can I grow and develop today?
The poem below is an added bonus for the day, I really enjoyed it and wanted to share.
“Sometimes people come into your life and you know right away that they were meant to be there…to serve some sort of purpose, teach you a lesson or help figure out who you are or who you want to become.
You never know who these people may be but, when you lock eyes with them, you know that every moment they will affect your life in some profound way. And sometimes things happen to you at the time that may seem horrible, painful and unfair but, upon reflection, you realize that without overcoming those obstacles you would have never realized your potential, strength, will power or heart.
Everything happens for a reason. Nothing happens by chance or by means of good luck. Illness, Injury, love, lost moments of true greatness and sheer stupidity all occur to test the limits of your soul. Without these small tests, life would be like a smoothly paved, straight, flat road to nowhere. Safe and comfortable but dull and utterly pointless. The people you meet affect your life. The successes and downfalls that you experience can create who you are, and the bad experiences can be learned from. In fact, they are probably the most poignant and important ones.
If someone hurts you, betrays you or breaks your heart, forgive them because they have helped you learn about trust and the importance of being cautious to whom you open your heart to. If someone loves you, love them back, unconditionally, not only because they love you, but because they are teaching you to love and open your heart and eyes to little things. Make every day count.
Appreciate every moment and take from it everything that you possibly can, for you may never be able to experience it again. Talk to people whom you have never talked to before, and actually listen. Let yourself fall in love, break free and set your sights high.
Hold your head up because you have every right to. Tell yourself you are a great individual and believe in yourself, for if you don’t believe in yourself, no one else will believe in you. You can make anything you wish of your life.
Create your own life and then go out and live it with absolutely no regrets. And if you love someone tell them, for you never know what tomorrow may have in store. Learn a lesson in life each day that you live! Today is the tomorrow you were worried about yesterday. Was it worth it?” – Author Unknown
