“Commitments drive philosophy. At the root of your philosophy lies your commitments and what you are committed to shapes your life and the lives of those around you. If you don’t like your lifestyle look at your results. If you don’t like your results look at your actions. If you don’t like your actions look at your attitude. If you don’t like your attitude look at your philosophy and if you don’t like your philosophy look at your commitments.” - Shawn D. Ross
I have thought about commitment quite a bit in the past few days. Thinking about what a commitment is and how often people do not understand how important they are. What is a commitment? Commitment is a pledge or promise, an obligation, engagement or involvement.
A pledge or a promise, those are strong words to use in referring to a commitment. As I thought about this more, I thought, what are the commitments in my life now? What am I more committed to? Here is what I came up with…
1) First, my commitment to God and being a living Bible to those who don’t read it.
2) Secondly is my commitment to my boyfriend, and the relationship we have and are continuing to develop. I am very committed to him and try to make every effort to let him know how important he is to me.
3) Thirdly is my commitment to my full-time job and all the activities I am involved in. I give my job 100% of me when I am there and I try to make a difference throughout the entire company.
4) Fourth is my commitment to my daily “Faceted Thoughts”. This is a way for me to minister and give back what I have been given and am committed to doing this daily.
5) Fifth, is my commitment to a nonprofit called Harvest for Humanity. I believe wholeheartedly in the mission of this non-profit and try to support it as much as I can.
6) Lastly is my commitment to my part-time business. I desire to build my part-time business but it has not grown much and some days I ask myself why, but I think I have answered myself in writing this.
As I look over the 6 things I listed above, a thought crept in my head and said, “What about you?” Where are you? Are you committed to you? The quote below hit me,
“Commitment is where this new mindset begins. It is the same with your life. Many people go through life not committing to themselves. They let the world “happen to them” and they do not commit to improving yet settle with living each day hoping and wishing.” - Shawn D. Ross
So I asked myself, do I want to live a life of “letting the world happen to me”, or do I want to commit to improving myself, even if it means going through pressure and being uncomfortable? I have to be committed to myself before I can be committed to others. What will I have to give if I do not give to myself first?
“Look at your life with pure honesty and focus only on your commitments. Then ask, “Is this the result I want?” If the answer is no, look at your commitments and decide where they need to be adjusted. What is your philosophy of life? Is it improvement and betterment for you and your fellow man or is it one of complacency, lack, and victim? Change your commitments and you change your life.” - Shawn D. Ross
What commitments are you going to change?
