I had to read this a few times to begin to understand what it said. For me, this quote is calling us to reach out and pull out the champion in those we meet. When I look at it from that perspective I
started to ask myself, “what is a champion?” This is what the dictionary says, “a person who defends a person or cause; to support someone or something, a protector of rights or honor; a winner or advocate.” All of the words associated with a Champion are held in high regard. Now look at your relationships, your interactions with people. Do you extend your hand and pull out their champion? Do you regard them as a winner? As I think about this, I think the first question I have to answer before I can answer the ones above is, do I think of myself as a champion? Do I defend others, am I a winner? Am I an advocate of healthy lifestyles? Do I support(commit) to those things I believe in? Do I love myself, do I love others?
I have never thought of myself as a champion until recently and I strive to answer yes to all the questions above. The only reason I believe I can say yes, “ I believe I am a champion!” is because others took the time to reach out and develop the champion they saw inside of me, even when I did not see it myself. I have a few champions in my life, those people who took the time to stop and see the potential champion in me. The first person who ever did that is the person who supported me in everything I did when I was working with him. He defended me and was committed to the things that were of utmost importance to him. He created win-win situations and it was only up to me to accept the challenge. He encouraged me to look past the surface and dig deep within.
I believe the heart of a champion is filled with love. It is someone who can look deep within and find compassion. When I think of a champion I think of a warrior… I picture in my head a transformer, tough on the outside but compassionate and caring on the inside. Too many times we make assumptions or judgments about others, and instead we should be reaching out and supporting or helping others find their inner champion.
My challenge to all of us today is to look inside and ask ourselves, are we champions? Who are you going to assist today in finding the champion within themselves?
