Happy; have you ever stopped to dissect what this word means? Well I took a moment to stop and look it up. Happy is feeling, showing, or expressing joy; pleased. Some other words to express happy are joyous, joyful, blithe, cheerful, merry, contented, gay, blissful, satisfied, favorable, propitious; successful, prosperous, appropriate, fitting, opportune, pertinent.
You may be wondering why I am writing about the word happy, well it is because I want to talk about the feeling of happiness and what it takes to be happy.
Yesterday at work I had a stupendous morning, things went well, I woke up refreshed and was ready to face my day with joy. Then some events occurred that curbed my feelings of joy, pleasure and contentment. I began to get agitated with people and what they were saying about an event I was in charge of. I left work and was quite upset, however, I knew that I had the rest of my day to turn everything around. I went to the store and picked up groceries and called a good friend of mine. We were talking and she told me an amazing story that she experienced during the day. I shared about my day and we talked and laughed about things that were important to us. When I hung up the phone my demeanor had changed and I was very content and happy. The feeling that I had when I hung up the phone was joy and contentment. In that moment I decided I was going to focus on the conversation I had that made me joyful.
It was in the moment of a good friend sharing their life, their experience that I in turn received so much. When I stop to think about what truly makes me happy it is the little things, the hugs I receive, the laughter I share, the crinkled eyebrows of my love when he eats my wonderful cooking. Those things, so small, so simple, yet how many times do we take them for granted, do we let the moments pass us by.
We have the ability to reach out and touch people. We can either bring happiness and joy or the detritus of the day, what are you giving out? What are the small things that make you happy? How are you going to hold onto every moment?
Every Moment by Joy Williams
We laughed out loud til we cried
And the tears were sweet
Midnight melted to morning
A moment faded to memory
All these days just slop away through our fingers, so
Don’t let go, Hold onto every moment, always know, Hold on to every moment that you can
We move on with no regrets to our destiny
Held by the hands of the Father
We share His love and He leads us through
All these days
Cause they slip away through our fingers, so
Don’t let go, Hold onto every moment, always know, Hold on to every moment that you can
Running through yesterday into tomorrow
Don’t let it just drift away
Forget about tying the hands of time
Give every minute to the One who’s given today
So don’t you ever go
