I want to share with you my experience of the power of words. Have you ever stopped to think about how your words might affect your life, your every moment? I share about words and their power because the past day or so I have struggled with using positive words. My boyfriend and I have a running joke where we have the “do not say words”. These words are: but, should, try, could, need to, have to, you know, and like. There are probably many more, but these are the ones that we both catch us saying. This morning I was struggling terribly with resistance to my boyfriends assistance on the words I was using in a conversation we had this morning. In the conversation he said, “I would like to bring someone to the presentation.” My response was, “that would be good but I am not sure who that will be.” He immediately heard the word BUT and asked, “why did you say that?” I responded because it was a fact that I am not sure who we can get to come. He stated that I might look at what my intentions were. I was very resistant to hearing any of this because in my head I wanted to be right… I thought I did not have anyone that would be able to come to the presentation which then made me realize that I am prejudging and limiting people to my belief about them. Later I texted my boyfriend after thinking about my response and I told him I was going to “hang-up” on the conversation we had earlier and I was going to have a ”redo”. So my redo conversation went something like this… (Him) ”I’d really like to bring someone to the presentation tonight.” (Me) “ That sounds like a good idea and I am going to keep my eyes and ears open.” Look at my 2 responses, the first one is very negative and doubtful, and the second one is positive and intentional. My response meanings totally changed just by changing the words I used.
Think about your words, what do you tell yourself every day? Are your words positive, do they support your intention in life? I have also been working on my response when someone asks how I am doing. Many people say “good” but when you think about it, is that just a phatic response or do you mean it? Are you just good or are you terrific, super, fantastic, fabulous, awesome or as someone I know says fantabulos. Don’t all of the words previously mentioned pump you up and get you on fire for life! I am working hard to use positive on fire words rather than mediocre words. Our words affect our thoughts, our feelings, and our actions. If I want positive results in my life I will focus on positive feelings, thoughts and words.
I watched a movie last night called “People vs. The State of Illusion”. In the movie one of the commentators said that if he had 60 seconds to talk to the world he would tell them that he wakes up
every day and says, “how can my life affect the world?” Several also summed it all up in one word, “I would tell them to LOVE”.
So today I challenge you, how can your words which lead to feelings, which lead to actions which lead to results, affect the world? Are you using negative debilitating or powerful affirming words ?
“Set a guard over my mouth, O LORD; keep watch over the door of my lips.” - Psalm 141:3
“Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable – if anything is excellent or praiseworthy – think(and speak) about such things.” - Philippians 4:8
