“Have you ever known someone who believed in you, someone who frequently spoke words of encouragement and praise? The kind of person who made you feel you could do it, whatever “it” was? That’s the kind of person God wants us to be. Paul gave a good guideline when he wrote that everything we say should build up the one who is listening.” – Doug Britton
“Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.” - Ephesians 4:29 NIV
We all love to receive words of encouragement about ourselves; however do we pay that encouragement forward. It is so easy to get caught up in the negative things in our lives or the world and we forget to be encouraging to those around us. In my work environment the atmosphere of the office has changed dramatically. It has gone from a laid back happy environment to a stiff somewhat negative environment. I have observed and noticed that everyone is quick to find the negative in the office, to point out what they do not like about our transition to a new building. I have also noticed that I have fallen and joined in the negative talk at times as well. However, after coming to work this morning I realized that the people who see the glass half full, might need a few words of encouragement, or they might need a smile to lift their spirits. I have a choice to join in the negative or be different and be encouraging and positive.
It is so important for each of us to voice words of encouragement, support, appreciation and respect. When we voice these words, it creates a welcoming environment of trust.
Who can you voice encouragement to today? Is there someone who it is hard for you to encourage of get along with, what can you do differently?
Make it a point today to be encouraging and uplifting in all that you do
“Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.” – 1 Thessalonians 5:11 NIV
