“You are also present as a whole person. Every person is made up of a mind, body, feelings, and spiritual nature. When you’re being with, all four of these are present in the moment.” - Brian Klemmer
Have you ever noticed how busy we all get? We all run from one event to the next. In my life my schedule is completely crazy sometimes. During the week I wake up at 3:30am, go to work till 3:00pm, run errands, cook dinner, attend meetings, entertain, have a social life and then back to sleep around 11:00pm. During that time I rarely stop to enjoy my surroundings.
Yesterday I went to work, went to the store, went to my boyfriend’s house and whipped up something to take to dinner with his parents, and then headed to their house. When we sat down to dinner and bowed our heads, I breathed a deep sigh and realized I had been running on turbo all day. I stopped in that moment and listened to the words beings prayed, felt the hands that I was holding, smelled the food that had been prepared, and breathed.
I needed to “be with” my environment at that moment in time. In that moment I was fully present with myself. I decided to quiet all the noise in my head and just be. I was able to relax for about 30 minutes, and when we left for our meeting I felt rejuvenated and refreshed. In saying that I was fully present to my environment and myself, I also made every effort to “be with” the people I was with as well. When I get the privilege of spending time with people, I want to be fully present to that person because they deserve it. Some of my most treasured moments are just sitting with, hugging, or cuddling with someone. When I am with someone I do not have to be active I can just “be with” that person and enjoy their company. Sometimes words just fill space, but just “being with” a person is priceless.
Too often we get wrapped up in the rat race of life checking off all the things we have to do today, however, what if the hands I held at dinner were the last time I held those hands, or what if that was the last time I was going to get to eat that meal. You never know what you might miss so stop, be with, breathe and be grateful for all that you have been given.
“Being with” means being in the moment, it’s not about agreement or disagreement. Today how can we practice being with someone?
“It’s often just enough to be with someone. I don’t need to touch them. Not even talk. A feeling passes between you both. You’re not alone.” –Marylin Monroe
